For July 2016, the KYMA team has selected Louis David as the photographer of the Month! Discover the interview with Louis, photographer in New York City.
Louis David, is a professional photographer based in the Big Apple – New York City, USA. His work has been published in many magazines and today he answers a few questions for us.
David, what is the one thing you wish everyone knew about you but (almost) no one does?
Louis: Even though I’m based in NYC, I really love to travel and I shoot all over the world so, even if your project isn’t in the NYC, contact me anyway 🙂
Can you share how you got into photography?
Louis: It started as a hobby, growing with the years and at one point my regular job in IT was making me feel miserable and so I took the decision to quit my job and start my photography business, since then I haven’t been happier, it is so fulfilling to do something you love.
Where did you start your life and how did you end up where you are?
Louis: I was born in NYC but I grew up in Belgium and started my business there too, but since this year I moved it to NYC
What was the most difficult part in becoming a professional photographer?
Louis: The hardest part, and it’s the same for any business, I think is the amount of work you have to do at the beginning and all the sacrifice you have to make, as a wedding photographer, you don’t really get to have a social life on the weekends anymore.
How would you define your style?
Louis: My style when shooting a wedding, could be defined by a mix of journalistic and documentary style with a fun and modern touch.
Can you tell us about the best photoshoot you had so far?
Louis: I don’t really have one best photoshoot, the most unusual I had, was the shoot of the interior of a B737 transformed in a private jet, with a bedroom and a bathroom, I was shooting at night so my team and I we had to put tracing paper on all of the 58 windows and light it from the outside with powerful HMI lights on light stands 20 feet high.
On the wedding side, the best I recently had was a beach wedding with a really cool couple and their friends on a small island in Madagascar.
What is your dream photoshoot and where?
Louis: My dream photoshoot is when I get to shoot really cool people, in crazy locations.
Any advice for future clients who want to work with you in New York?
Louis: Don’t be late – I get booked very quickly in New York. Send me a booking request and lets meet for a drink and discuss about how cool your project is!
What are your 4 favorite images ever? Could you tell the story of each one of them?
Louis: The trickiest question of all, it was really hard to select four images, It’s impossible for me to chose the bests images as I never am satisfied enough with my work to say this image is the best but here four images I like.
Louis: This picture was shot on a recent trip in the south part of Bolivia, to be honest when I shot it I didn’t thought It would be my favorite of the trip and one one my favorite landscape picture – but hey, you never know 🙂
Louis: This portrait of those two gorgeous models, Aliane and Philippine, from Mademoiselle agency in Paris was shot by pure luck, I was shooting Aliane for a jewel ad campaign and at the end of the shoot, her friend Philippine, dropped by at the shoot location and seeing them together I took them aside and took three shots by a window and that’s how I got this portrait of those twos beauties.
Louis: This sunrise is the most amazing one I had the luck to witness, It was in Hawaii last winter, I was shooting a model on the Lanikai beach and we got there really early to have the beach for ourselves and the morning light, shortly after the sun got up, the sky got on fire and I stopped shooting the model to take picture of this amazing sunrise.
Louis: This picture is one from the wedding I got to shoot on Nosy Iranja in Madagascar, we were lucky to have such a nice background to shoot the couple photos after the ceremony.
Thank you very much Louis!
